I had kind of a fairy tale Huck Finn type of childhood, I wouldn't trade it for anything. But my parents were very working class and small town. They knew nothing about higher education, they thought those who went to college were just too lazy to get a real job. They didn't see that a college degree is a middle class union card.

My parents did somethings right and several things wrong but they did the best they could at the time with their resources. I would change nothing because even their mistakes helped form my life and I might be different than I am.

I wish my parents would have tried to build my confidence more. They always said things like 'you're not coordinated enough' 'you don't run fast enough', etc.
As an adult I have always had this same attitude, I can't do things. At about 45 I learned I could do a lot of things I never thought I could. Unfortunately my health no longer allows it.
My advice to a new parent is to always encourage your child to try things. When they aren't good, tell them they just need to try harder (probably true). Never tell them they aren't capable.

my parents were always good, and what would i change more then likely it would of been my dad, he drink ed yet in the years passed i did see why, he had cancer and tumors eating at his brain and nothing the doctors did would easy his pain, he worked in the aluminum company punching pots in those heated places, the drinking eased his pain enough so he could sleep, yet being with my parents the children 11 of us, you know i would not change it, we had love, clothing trips just like any family we just worked a lot harder to keep us together, my childhood was loving and fun.

They could have disciplined me when it came to bad grades. They did great installing morals, and common sense though.
