In a tournament chess set, the King is the tallest piece.
The next tallest is the Queen, followed Bishop, Knight and Rook.
This is done so the pieces at the start of a game form a nice slope from both edges of the board to the middle (the King and Queen).

I would assume the King is the tallest piece on the board.

It depends on the company that makes the pieces; they all differ. Usually the King is the tallest, but it's not uncommon for the Queen to be the tallest.

The king i'm pretty sure, but i do have a set where the queen is the tallest, so it depends on the set i guess, so either the king or queen always!

I'm going to design a chess set with a little person king, because I like little people.
I might make my knights the taller ones.
