Public transportation is cheap compared to the taxis which are very expensive.

The trains and subways here are distance based which means the further you go, the more you pay. JR & Tokyo Metro lines are the cheapest and the private rail lines are more expensive.

Transport (buses/trains/subway) in Tokyo is cheap. Avoid the taxis if you're on a budget. Traveling around Japan can be expensive if you use the bullet train - it's often cheaper to fly.

Getting from the airport by train or bus will start around 1,500 and go up up to about 3,000 yen one way. Getting around by Tokyo Metro is the cheapest. The most it will ever cost you is about 280 yen (but usually more like 160-230 yen) one way JR is from 140 yen up to about 450 yen in Tokyo. Traveling on little day trips outside Tokyo to Kamakura, Yokohama, Fuji area are under or around 1,600 yen one way. You can get a day pass to Hakone for about 3,500 yen. If you get a prepaid card like a Suica card or Pasmo card (500 yen deposit) you can charge up as much as you want and pretty much use all of the train and many of the bus lines and you don`t have to stop and study the map and figure out what tickets to buy every time you get on a train. The machines that sell them are next to the ticket machines and always have English instructions.

Currently 100 yen is around 78 cents US.

Taxis are expensive, like anywhere. Always use trains and subways. And walk. Depending on the weather, Tokyo is a great city to discover on foot--like most cities of the world.City maps in English are available. People are generally courteous to tourists. Most students know English and are eager to practise it with tourists. Less expensive eating places can be discovered with some effort.
In summary, avoid taxis, travel by trains, and wherever possible, WALK.
