I just moved into my own place for the first time, and my trash can has this annoying habit of sticking to high heaven within 2-3 days. Granted this most often occurs after I have just finished grocery shopping and have chucked 2-3 meat packages into the trash can.
Yes, I know that would be where the smell is coming from. But my question is this....
When I lived at home with my folks, we could throw just about anything into our trash can and it never smelled as horrid as this thing does. Is there a secret I was mising for 19 years of my life?
BTW... my mom smoked 2-3 packs a day. Is it that her cigerette smoke just overed up the trash?

Trust me, I do take the trash out, but I recycle so many things and its just me.... so it takes a week to even half fill a bag.

I know in our house we take our trash out almost every night. So, I'm guessing since it's just you, you aren't generating enough trash for it to go out everynight... Get a trash can with a good sealing lid... If you have to throw away something really stinky double bag it. Save some plastic grocery bags and put it in there and then throw it away... That might help, but I think you might have to throw your garbage outside sooner

First, clean trash can with regular dish soap and water. Then, use and odor absorber. I found the perfect product for this and know dozens of other people that use it. It is a natural fragrance free carbon product called FRIDGE IT carbon odor absorbers. Little purple cube with an incredible activated carbon filter inside that is really, really, great and eliminates the odors and for a long time. It works so much better than baking soda all those sprays and fragrances that just cover up smells and don't get rid of them. . Just hang a couple of these on or near the trash can. It will get rid of odors. Each only costs a couple of dollars. I use this product everywhere including car(smoke and pet smells), storage, closets, my fridge and also under sinks, near trash and have friends that use it on cat litter box and also diaper pails - it's that good. I really recommend it. You can buy it in kitchen gadget sections in stores like walmart and linens and things. I also think camping world sells it and internet. Definitely worth trying

Ok ready for the best answer?
Here goes:
I am 95% positive that you probably have the wrong trash can. What I mean by that is that you probably have one of those ones with a lid where you use your foot to open it to throw trash out. Believe it or not those are the nastiest kind to have because they do not allow air in to neutralize the odors by allowing the trash to breath. Instead they trap the odor in and lock it in an air tight container and then each time you open it to throw out trash the stench is unbearable. Trust me once you switch to an open garbage can ( no lid or a lid that is not air tight but that swivels) you will see a difference in a flash. also try keeping a can of lysol nearby and giving a spray once a day in between taking out the trash each week.Go ahead and vote me for best answer , you know you want to. =0) Goodluck.

There are a few ways to deal with the problem. Throwing the trash out often is a good way to minimize the problem. Using a smaller trash can will "force" this to happen. One way to help eliminate the smell once it is present is to spray something like Lysol into the trash can when you change the bag. You could also sprinkle baking soda into the bottom of the trash can.

The obvious answer here is to make sure you double bag (use a plastic shopping bag and tie it tight) around any perishable food items before throwing them away.
I also like to place one of those sticky air fresheners on the bottom of my trash bin to help neutralize odors where they start.
Once I take the trash out if it still smells I spray the bags down with a cleaner like lysol or clorox bleach spray ... this also keeps animals from ripping your bags open as you leave them on the curb for trash day.
Good Luck.

There are odor guard trash bags in all sizes; use those and, um, here's a thought - empty the trash. :-) Seriously, whenever you throw out meat, eggs, cheese, anything like that, take the trash out right away, or the next morning at the latest. It's not only stinky, but it's unhealthy since spoiled meats, etc., contain bacteria.

I think you would benefit from regularly cleaning the trash can itself.
One other thing that could also help is spraying baking soda in the trash can and the garbage bag. I also leave lemon peels on the bottom of the trash can.
