I don't want t to look like it is crushing the sinding. Is there a right way to do this?

If the bracket or the pole is against the siding, it will prevent the siding from expanding and contracting with the temperature changes. You really need to seperate contact of the bracket, pole and siding. If you cut the siding, be sure to run a bead of silicone caulk around the edges to prevent water from entering behind the siding.
