Our clock system is ambiguous. The proper term would be "12 noon" or "12 midnight", not am or pm. That's why most of the world has switched to the 24 hour clock, where midnight is 00:00 and noon is 12:00, and the day ends one minute after 23:59.

Yes, 12 am is midnight. But your question is a very good one and the person accusing you of being an idiot is the idiot himself.
Why would a system go ... 10pm 11pm 12am 1 am ...
If you were counting apples then oranges, you would count.
11 apples, 12 apples, then you would start 1 orange, 2 oranges, etc..
NOT: 11 apples, 12 oranges, 1 orange, 2 oranges....
You have spotted an inconsistency in this system. Good for you.
