If you want to check the trouble code yourself,it's very easy to do on your Chrysler vehicle. After the check engine light has come on at least once and the battery has not been disconnected follow this procedure: Turn the key to the run position then off, repeating the sequence a total of 3 times, leaving it in the run position the last time. You need to do this within a total of 3 seconds total. The check engine light will then flash a series of 2 digit numbers. The first will be 12 followed by the trouble code then finished with 55.Example: flash once, short pause, flash twice long pause.the number is 12.

Im surprised with a 1995 dodge minivan you havent seen the light earlier. BTW, your "mechanic" shouldnt touch anything ever again! Any decent mechanic can hook the car up to a computer and tell you exactly why the light is on. Go to a real mechanic!

That light can come on for something as simple as, it is time for a service- oil change.
Shop around for a good price.
Call around and find a shop, or dealership that will hook up the computer to it and tell you what is going on.
It maybe be something as simple as pushing a reset switch, or loose battery cables. If you have to pay more than $25.00 to have it checked, they are ripping you off.

I am not a mechanic, but I had a car for five years with a check engine light on. nothing happened.
I change oil they check for me antifreeze, transmission oil brake fluid, steering oil... and no problems.
I suggest you don't do more than that, plus buying another van, could be cheaper than trying to fix until you turn this light off.

Dont listen to your mechanic. You need to take it to a shop where they can hook it up to a computer and replace the defective part not the entire system.

You might as well have it fully checked. If there really is a problem and it goes untreated, it will cause more harm to your car and end up costing you more money.
