It completely depends on the car, the year, and for some witch sub model it is. You need to find out if the car is carb. fed, TBI (throttle body injected), FI (fuel injected). Also what computer system it has for measuring air (only for TBI and FI cars) .It will either have a common MAP(manifold absolute pressure) system, or a VAF(Velocity air flow), or a MAF(mass air flow). You can find all this information at you local auto parts store like Advanced or O'riely. Once you have figured all this out you can begin to diganose your car. If it is carb. fed you could need to rebuild the carb, change the filter or the pump.If it's not carb. fed it depends on the year of the car as to how many sensors it could be but it will more than likely be a sensor before the fuel system. The common for this are the TPS(throttle postion sensor) but can cause rough Idle also if you dont have a rough idle prob. not it. MAP sensor, Air Temp sensor, CPS(crankshaft postion sensor), Knock Sensor. You might wonder why the CPS and Knock sensor, well if these are bad then when you hit the gas the computer will not know when to input gas.
Ok now another this is the ignition system the most commonly denied but usally the culprit. Check it to see if it has enough spark if its not white or blue on all plugs then your flooding the plug out when you give it gas.
In the end diagnosing a problem like this has many answers and the only way to narrow it down is to find all the info. about the car then cross off what sensors your car does not have.
Hope I have been of help!

It could be a fuel problem. Normally it would not be idling properly either. It could also be an O2 sensor too. (That's O as in Oxygen)
Starting with the cheapest;
replace the fuel filter.
Second, replace the air element(filter).
Third, you could have the 02 sensor checked at most muffler shops or all purpose auto shop (ie Goodyear or Sears).
Good luck,

That happened to me in my truck. It had something to do with a part that intakes the fuel and air or something like that. It wasnt as expensive as i thought to replace though.
