Shakespeare was primarily a playwright, but he invented a form of poetry known today as a "Shakespearean sonnet." There are other forms of sonnets, such as the Petrarchian sonnet, but those were originally written in Italian, so we're not too familiar with them. Shakespeare's plays were also in poetic prose. It is said that he used half a million different words in his writings. When we consider that today the average teenager uses about 200 words in daily speech, it's absolutely astonishing. One more thing: spelling was not very important in Shakespeare's time. He is said to have spelled his own name 14 different ways!

He was a poet and a playwright.

Apart from his plays, he wrote sonnets, and other poems (The Rape of Lucrece, Venus and Adonis and A Lover's Complaint).

He was a playwright...meaning he wrote plays, not novels. If I am not mistaken he also wrote a few poems, so I suppose he could be classified as a poet, but he is mostly known for his plays.

Playwright, actually. I have never read all of one of his plays, but he is best known for being a playwright.

If I had to pick one of your choices, poet.
