Not realistic. My husband already spends an hour an a half getting to work, and it's not because of traffic! He'd need a pack mule, not just a horse!
Not everyone lives in a city. Not everyone has a job within a couple of miles of where they live. Not everyone has the same work location for a whole year (so don't tell me to move closer!). And some people have to pack a lot of stuff in with them every day. Not everyone is a desk jockey.
When we chose our house, one of the factors was the distance to my husband's typical jobsites. We did fairly well with getting within a 50 miles of most of them.
Mass Transit is not an option; his hours are beyond the schedules & sites 5 miles beyond the nearest stop.
Besides, he's doing physical work for 10-12 hours a day! It would be stupid and cruel to expect him to walk or ride a bike to work. Have you ever seen a guy in Carharts, steeltoe boots, hardhat, carrying a lunchbox & thermos riding a bike?!?! Where, exactly, would he put his yo-yo, welding hood, leathers, etc?
Sorry if this sounds like a rant, but you're assuming everyone has a cushy job in an office. Gas prices are killing us; even with carpooling. The national average may be below $3, but we've been higher than the national average the whole time.
btw, all the driving I do (less than 50m a week) involves a ton of stuff in the car. Think it would be funny to try to go to Costco on a bike!

I live 16 miles from where I work. I love my job, and I have been there a long time. Realistically, most people would move closer to where they work. I cannot do that, because all the neighborhoods on the west end of the valley are restricted neighborhoods, except those that go for almost a million $. Could I get a job closer to home? Not likely. I live in a poor neighborhood. No good jobs here.
I would ride public transportation, if the drivers weren't the most stuck-up @$$-holes I've ever encountered. Don't even get me started on their behavior against bus passengers! There are a few who are considerate, but most of them in Las Vegas, Nevada, couldn't care less if they left you bleeding to death on the sidewalk. Most of the time, they won't even stop for a single passenger.
BTW, I am not handicapped or disabled.

I kinda hope the gas prices go up...My husband works in the oil fields and we have more money when it goes up. It doesn't really help anyone else out and I'm sure people are sick of the gas prices. It's just nice for it to actually be working to our advantage I guess.

You don't need to go that far! Just car pool or take public transportation! It would make life SOOOOOOOOO much easier!
