In 1776, Americans fought a war of independence. It was a struggle to be free of the bonds of government. They wanted to make their own rules and not have rules forced upon them by an oppressive government. They formed a government of their own. A government designed not to interfere with their personal liberty nor their freedom of choice.
Is this independent spirit waning in America? Are Americans becoming too dependent on their government?
A national healthcare system will be one more way for the government to control your life. Are you willing to give up more independence?

Yes, the U.S. is in the midst of a clash of ideology. I do not want to give up any of my independence. There are too many not willing to work hard enough to achieve any type of success, just want to tax the hard working and those that make good decisions.

Socialist programs will just create more of those dependent on government, lowering productivity and the standard of living for us all.

What we need to do is remove the middle man from the health care industry .
Insurance companies make billions of dollars create massive red tape and increase the cost of providing health care .
Whats needed is an automatic billing process that is paid with a check from uncle sam .
Any fraud in this billing should meet with heavy fines to the doctors seizing their assets, homes ,and investments the same as they do with drug dealers .
Have 1 investigator for every 1000 doctors . A 50,000 a year salary and 5% of any fraud they uncover .
This I am sure will only cost a few hundred million rather then the billions we pay now .
How many claims adjusters and managers are needed currently . People who do nothing except make sure each and every box is checked properly and all the information is included in the claim .
Leaving out a single piece results in it being returned to the doctors office marked unpaid .
This results in doctors having to hire a billing specialist that is familiar with the procedures needed to get paid .
Can you imagine how much this costs .
We do need some health care reform . We need to end all private insurance ,install a simple payment system with a small oversight board and provide payment through direct taxes to those items that contribute to poor health . A double quarter pounder with cheese and fries should have a tax while a garden salad should not . Sausages taxed pork chops not . You get the picture I think about what items deserve a tax to pay for future health care needs . Chocolate and sweets and sodas need taxing cause diabetics are created not born .
Sound rational debate and cost cutting practices can enhance our health care industry ,for to long people have profited who have not provided care but simply leached on to Grab a buck .

War is too strong a word. It is more like a quiet coup. The government has been usurping power from the states for years. In reading the documents written by the framers it has always seemed to me that this was one of the things they feared the most. For this reason they sought to limit the power of the federal government. Freedoms are being taken from us quietly more and more everyday. It is being done in the name of security, compassion, health and a variety of others means. The sad part is that most of us just go along without fighting back because it is viewed as being just too difficult or time consuming to take a real stand against tyranny anymore. I do think it will swing at some point though. One day people will wake and wonder just how we reached the sad point we are headed for. At that time I fear there will be a real shooting revolution again.

I think you need to take a college history course... perhaps do some reading on the founding fathers. No, they did not "fight a war to be free of government". They fought a war to be free of a government that did not have their interests in mind.

They fought a war to ensure that their governance was focused on the common good, not the good of a foreign or singular entity.

The notion that the founding fathers opposed government is as silly as the notion that they opposed all forms of taxation: it simply is not supported in any writings and is not supported by common sense. Regarding taxation, the complaint wasn't with regard to being taxed in general, it was with regard to the fact that the king was leveraging Taxation to support the East India company... the opposition was to corporate welfare, not government usage of funds.

Government usage of funds is viewed by any remotely pragmatic person as being necessary.

Do you like roads?
How about having police available if you need assistance?
How about fire departments?

Government services are essential. Any sane view of the founding fathers accepts that they knew that.

What, precisely, do you think is going to happen when the baby boomers all reach the age where they can no longer work but require medical care for being elderly? We're quickly approaching that milestone.

National healthcare is no longer an option for ideologues to argue over. It's a necessity.

So, no... since your premise is factually inaccurate, your question is also moot.

Very well put and on spot. I agree that our government is overstepping their boundaries. I don't think that things like smoking bans, trans fat bans, universal health care and that sort of thing is what they are supposed to do. Their job is protecting our country from enemies and protecting our civil rights. Bans on smoking and trans fats do not protect my rights or stop illegal invaders and terrorist from coming. I have the choice of going into an establishment that allows smoking and fatty foods and if I don't like those things I also have the choice to walk away. I have a choice of whether or not to take a job that doesn't offer medical insurance and if that is important to me I should decline a position in a company that doesn't give the benefits. People are quick to say the government owes us more but when we start to place that much dependence on them we also relinquish our power and freedom to them. Our forefathers new this and set the government up based on the principle of little interference from government.

In my opinion the government should not control my retirement, medical care our my kids school. They should not control my habits and diet. They should give me my social security money and a large portion of my taxes back and trim the fat from their budget. I am a grown man and I can decide how to best handle my retirement. My diet and habits may in fact kill me but I am aware of that and it is my decision to live as I do and not the governments job to fix me as long as I am not infringing on the rights of others.

well, that is exactly what a socialist government does, now isn't it?

and, that is what the liberal-socialists would like, now isn't it?

they claim to be intellectuals, yet they cannot successfully debate, as that would require logical reasoning, and they just are not equipped for that... why not? because they want government to also think for them, or at the very least, for the educational systems to tell them WHAT to think.

yet they are the biggest bunch of hypocrites alive. take, for instance, the aclu's statement made concerning the foot washing stations the muslims want the university of michigan to install, for the purpose of practicing their religion....

WHAT WOULD THE aclu HAVE TO SAY ABOUT CHRISTIANS WANTING TO INSTALL SOME PARAPHERNALIA IN SOME UNIVERSITY FOR THE PURPOSE OF PRACTICING THEIR RELIGION?!?!?!?!?!

Sadly, yes. Inevitably, it will be the downfall of this country. We can only hope and pray that a TRUE conservative gets into office.
