Which Los Angeles-set crime epic from the '90s is better: Heat, starring Al Pacino and Robert De Niro and directed by Michael Mann, or Pulp Fiction, starring John Travolta and Samuel L. Jackson and directed by Quentin Tarantino?

This is an interesting juxtaposition of movies to choose between. They're both gangster style movies, where you have protagonists that are "bad guys" and you find yourself rooting for them (well...sort of, in the case of Pulp). They're both incredible films with A list casts.

Pulp Fiction probably has the best dialog in a movie -- ever -- and the screenplay is entirely intelligent. The film's non-linear approach to telling the story is genius. Gritty, too.

Heat is pretty much the opposite. It's a linear and has a "high brow" high-class feel to it.

To choose between the two of them, you've got to go to the end of the movies. While they both have good endings, of the two films, it is Heat that wins out for me because it has catharsis, which Pulp lacks.

So, bottom line: Heat.

I think Heat is an excellent film, and Pulp Fiction is an awesome movie. There are some big differences though. I can't think of even one scene in Heat that made me laugh...there are several throughout Pulp Fiction. The action is very gritty and realistic in Heat, whereas the situations in Pulp Fiction seem to exist only in screenplays. I happen to like both of them, but also believe this a slight case of the apple versus the orange.

Dude - it's a no brainer. Heat is excellent, but there's no way it can compare to PULP FICTION.
Pulp Fiction is a piece of cinematic history. The dialogues (that have been oft quoted/imitated/spoofed), the super-cool clothes, the amazingly rendered non-linear narrative and the unbelievable surf music that is all wrapped up seamlessly in a flawless package cannot be easily replicated (heck even Tarantino can't duplicate the style & success of Pulp Fiction).

Pulp Fiction. Hands down ...and I'm not that big of a fan of Quentin "The Chin" Tarintino.

IMO, Heat Sucked...extremely overrated.
The ONLY good thing about the movie was the robbery.
That's it.

Pacino and DeNiro barely shared screen time.
It was a huge disappointment.
