My pap test came back "abnormal cells from an unknown origin". She also said that puts me at high risk for having HPV.Now my Dr. has scheduled a colposcopy in a few weeks. I have been with the same man for 5yrs and all of my paps have come back normal since I started getting them years ago. I know he has never strayed.(trust me I know) If the test comes back and I have HPV. how can that be?

Pretty much, with HPV, unless you are a nun, you will get it at some point in your life (although with the new vaccines . . . ). There are several different strains. Some cause warts. Some can make women more at risk for cervical cancer, and some just really do nothing. You can, technically, fight the virus off when infected the first time, but since it sounds like you've maintained contact with your partner you are probably infected. This does not mean you have cheated or that he has cheated. It can take a while for cells to become abnormal. I hate to use the "C" word (cancer) as, in all likelyhood, this is NOT cancer, but cells don't become cancerous overnight, so HPV-infected cells would not become abnormal overnight.

If the test comes back that you have HPV then you just watch. If it's not that abnormal, you continue to get PAP smears every year. If it is smightly more abnormal that your doctor would like, you get PAP smears every 6 months. And if there is slighly more serious abnormality then there are several procedures that can laser or burn the abnormal tissue off, none of which even barely affects your ability to have kids later on in life.

I know it's scary (I was shocked when I first learned that I had it as well) but it will be ok :)

you can be a carrier or it can kind of hibernate for years, so donot worry that he has strayed on you if it is HPV. A colposcopy is a very simple procedure and there is a chance that you may never have to have it done again. The important thing to remember is to keep up with regular pap smears (they will want you to do them every 6 months for a while). It will be fine, it is a little uncomfortable, but not horrible....good luck

I think HPV is something everyone has it just doesn't show up for some if that makes any sense. I've had a colpo. because all of my paps came back abnormal. I thought it hurt but it was just really bad cramps type pain that I'm used to because of endometriosis. I was told I had HPV but have never had any symtpoms and they never gave me anything to "get rid of it"
