Our house reeked of gas yesterday after my husband mowed the lawn and put the mower back in the garage. We aired out the house and the garage and closed everything up before we went to bed. I woke up in the middle of the night and our bedroom smelled very strongly of gasoline. The garage is on the opposite side of the house. When I opened up the garage door, the smell was overwhelming so we moved the lawnmower to the backyard. There is no gas coming out of it. We checked thoroughly and there is no external leak. Could the gas be leaking inside of the mower? It's definitely the lawnmower, because after we removed it, the smell was gone.

You haven't looked for the leak hard enough yet. As said, it could be from the fuel tank and just not visible. A little gas makes a big smell in a garage. Also remove the air filter and look into the carb throat. It could be the float valve in the carb.

I have had problems with two mowers like the one you are describing, both times it was the plastic gas tank leaking from a seam on the edge where it could not be seen with out removing the tank. The only solution in both mowers was to replace the tank.
You will want to check the tank and also where the line connects from the tank to the carburetor.

Internal leak is unlikely. More likely a leak where it can't be seen.
If the mower has been on its side lately, it is possible that some gas may have leaked into the crankcase. Try changing the oil.

If it's a 4 cycle it could have leaked into the oil. Check it, if the oil has gas in it you have a repair job coming up.
