Great. You went and found a single case where a BEAR, NOT A WOLF THANK YOU VERY MUCH killed a child. I guarantee that the campers did something wrong. Bears don't just come. They probably left their trash out, or put things that attract bears in the tent -- all simple mistakes that are easy to avoid if people would jsut pay attention to all the warnings telling them NOT to do that! And then the wildlife gets killed.
Let's see, if it is between one human child and all the bears roaming free (or wolves, or cougars) tough luck! I pick the bears! Tragedy, but it's a no-win situation, and in that case it is better to suffer a tragedy than to become a slaughterer.

Thank you to those common-sense, knowledgable, clear-headed answers like Hammer's. It's thanks to people like you that we haven't all died from humanity's mistakes by now.

I'm not an advocate of carrying guns in the back country, except for hunting, but if you must. A bear is not really anything to worry about, make some noise, throw a few rocks at it, and the bear will leave. A cat attack is a valid concern, since California discontinued hunting them they have begun to attack humans. In the event of an attack I think a pistol would be best, you are talking about close range defense. If you are going into the back country with stock you should always carry a pistol powerful enough to put down one of your animals if necessary. This is allowed even in National Parks, the weapon has to be unloaded and carried inside a pack, not much use in a defensive situation. Though I've never had a ranger search my tent to see what I'm sleeping with under my pillow. More than 35 years backpacking/ horsepacking experience, over a 1,000 nights in the back country.

I'm sure there are some enviro-wackos who only regret that they weren't allowed to help the bear kill the kid. After all they probably think it was an appropriate punishment for the kid and his family daring to impose on the Bears domain, how dare humans try to live on Earth when it should belong to the animals only? As for me I still think the coolest thing I ever saw was that wack job who took his Earth worship so far that he was trying to live with the Grizzly bears, the cool part was when the Grizzly bears ate him.
Ok and just for those who seem to wonder, the child was not unsupervised in some clearly dangerous area,he was dragged from a tent in a camping area as I understand it. And of course thanks to many of the Liberal idiots who run parts of our government most park areas forbid firearms, even though there are risks for which a firearm would be quite appropriate, like Bears for example. This story is an example of why I never go into an area like this unarmed, regardless of the law. I think I would rather be fined for carrying a weapon in a park area than have to attend my childs funeral,or have my family have to bury me,but perhaps that's just me.And lets thank everyone who provided the idiotic responses like,"What should we do kill all the Bears?" Because obviously the answer is Of course not! But as I stated before,I for one think anyone who goes into an area that has top predators in it unarmed, regardless of the law, is either stupid or foolhardy, but again perhaps that's just me.

But, everyone knows from watching that horrible movie, The Bear (from France I think) in the 80s, that bears sound like cat's purring all the time, even the big scary ones.
They are ever so soft and cuddly, heh.
I must digress though, being a "Wolf" myself, I will have to defy you to tell me of a time when a wolf attacked a person in recent years, and I am not counting coyotes or wild dogs, just pure bred wolves.
I think we should arm all bears so they can shoot back at the hunters, that would be a real sport, heh. I can see it now, the right to arm bears, oh wait, I got that mixed up, nyuck nyuck.

Everybody is missing the point. If the correct precautions are taken, rarely does a bear attack a human. Kids are notorious for going to bed with the food and grime they got into all day still on their bodies. Hands that handled food (often meats). clothes that smell. Trash all around camp. The reality is, if you take appropriate precautions, bears are usually safe. Hating bears because of human misbehavior is wrong and ignorant.
Screw best answer crap on this one. I am annoyed and discouraged by people who think that destroying everything that may harm kids (or people) is right. What about some responsibility here. Cars kill kids, dogs kill kids, parents kill kids, diseases kill kids, bicycle wrecks kill kids, electricity kills kids, skateboards, other kids, motorcycles, etc, etc, etc.....how many bears kill kids each year compared with automobiles alone???
Very naive and disappointing question.
P.S. I hope bears, cougars, and wolves roam free forever...and I hope people learn to live with them. For humanities sake.

Human beings are not happy a bear killed a child. As far as bears and cougars and wolves roaming free, this is absurd - we are developing and paving our way into having no wild spaces left. That said, what the heck do you expect from a wild bear? Tea and crumpets? And what about all the wild and dangerous HUMANS that are allowed to "roam free"? This isn't about environmental "wackos" - its just a tragedy, pure and simple.

The only problem I have with that is I do not want animals pushed into exhibition. If you go to the areas of this country where wild animals live you must take precautions. Just like don't go to some of the western areas where bears are and then if they come to you car you stop and reach out to feed them, you are looking to get mauled. Even at a zoo I don't try to get closer to the lions or elephants to just say I was with them. I feel we must protect animals in their natural habitats and this to me from the basic I saw was one for animals. I am still sorry for the family that lost their child.

What would you do kill all the wild animals? No one is happy a child was killed, but anyone who camps in the wild should be aware that there are risks associated with being in that type of environment and the government can not protect us from bears, cougars, etc., as they do not abide by the same laws. Geez!

Was there any reason this child was unsupervised and unprotected in an area where bears are? I hate the fact a child died but, again, why was the child alone in an area where bears were?
Do you have a link - I would be interested in reading the story to get more details. I really had to base my answer on assumptions since I have not read any info about this.

The boy was 11 years old. I bet the Wackos are more upset the bear was put down than the child was killed. We should have tried to understand the bear's feelings!! Maybe we should have apologized to the bear, as the family may have been trespassing on the bear's land.
