I am not the most graceful person in the world and sometimes, after I have run into a particular object more than once, I tap it as I walk by to make sure it is still there, waiting to jump out and trip me.

Tapping on someones desk (with your fingers or other objects) is a common way of silenting saying hello or how ya doing. They are acknowledging you without making conversation to avoid getting in trouble at work. It's common in most work places. I've even had it done to my desk while in a training class or in school.

Is your desk made of wood? Knocking on wood is suppose to be lucky.

Could be a way to say hello or for you to acknowledge them. People want to be seen and acknowledge. Are you important, higher ranking, or a leader of some sort? They want your attention.

Assuming your desk is made of wood, it could be the old "knock on wood" superstition. If not, maybe they're just trying to distract you.

Why don't you ask them why they're doing it or tell them to stop?

People use their fingers to set spatial parameters in the same way a cat uses their whiskers. The more tactile you are, the less clumsy you are. Unless you are a groping drunk of course.

Smear a light film of superglue on edge of desk.

You got stuck with that awful corner desk also didn't you?

I feel you man. Sometimes I try to trip them.

They are just saying Hi non verbally probably because if they spoke there would be a conversation that time does not warrant.
