Technically you will burn the same amount of calories. The main difference is that if you swim for the hour straight you will get a better endurance workout. Basically it will be better for your heart. I understand a lot of times it is easier to swim 2 half hour workouts rather than a full hour, but I believe the full hour will be better for you. By keeping your heartrate up for that long, you will be able to keep it up for longer, and it will be easier for you!

There's more to it than just the time factor. What intensity? Distance covered? Stroke swam? Water conditions? All of these things play into differences between swim times. The results of continuous swimming for an hour or two half-hour stints are affect by all of these factors.

It mainly makes a difference if you are trying to lose weight. If you are trying to lose weight it is important to keep your heartrate up for a certain amount of time. After a certain amount of time your body starts using fat reserves, therefore burning fat. After only a half hour, it doesn't make much of a difference.
