I can still remember helping my daughter remember which was which when she was in 3rd grade many years ago--
stalagmite is up (told her to think of Mighty Mouse with arms raised up.)
staligtite is down

I'm a teacher and I tell my students to remember stalactite holds on tight so it can hang down, the stalagmite is the one on the ground. :)
