I'm going to the ob/gyn next week what do they do to you? Do they do something with "down there?"

A Gynecologist is a Dr. specializing in female reproductive parts. Vagina, Cervix, Uterus, Ovaries, Breasts, concerns about sex, Menstruation

An Obstetrics Dr. specializes in pregnancy and infant growth before and during birth.

What will they do at an OB/GYN appointment?
Ask you questions
Check your internal/vaginal fluid by collecting some on a swab to send to the lab.
When you lie back on the table, your feet will go into stirrups, positioning your knees up and apart. This is to give the Dr. the best access to open your vagina with a speculum (a device inserted that will hold the vagina open for the exam)
There will be both a visual and a manipulative exam of your female parts (done with gloved hands and in the presence of a female nurse) This will include feeling for abnormalities in your reproductive organs, your breasts checked for lumps, and kneading your stomach to feel for your organs.
Your exam may or may not include a urine or blood test.

Any questions that you have for the Dr., be sure to write them down so you don't forget to ask. No question is too private or too dumb to ask. That is what this Dr. is there for, to observe and to educate you on your reproductive health.

Are you going for a pap smear? It is uncomfortable at first but there is a chaperon with you the whole time so need to fear. You will be asked to get undressed and put on a gown(they will give you privacy for this). When the doctor comes in and starts the exam he will tell you word for word what he is doing. Just try to remember to relax. If you don't relax it will be hard to put the spectrum in to check you..Good Luck!

Yes it is called a "pap smear" she will open your vagina a little (cold) and use a speculum totake a sample of your cervix (this is to test for cancer). This is your first visit so she will will also examine you inside to make sure everything is OK, Then she will examine your breasts for lumps.
