Kind of a broad question, but a broad answer would be that the computers replace a wide array of older office technology in each of those workplaces.

For instance, in the school, it might replace a library full of books by holding all of the text, or it might be used to keep track of students, test scores, and lunch menus.

In a hospital, you'd see a computer being used in place of typewritten lists of drugs or patient names, or to test possible interactions between different kinds of therapies.

The same sort of thing holds true for other businesses.
