If it is authentic sadness due to some reality that is sad, like the killing of all those humans in Iraq, I see no way to be happy over that.
But if I am depressed and feeling blue, just out of some hormonal situation maybe I'm tired or whatever? I just stop enjoying the feeling and start enjoying happiness. Stop the dependent factors that are required for such a feeling to exist. If at worse, a good session of hatha yoga that helps me remove my attention from the tense consequences of this wanton desire to be sad.

If you are denying yourself pleasures that would help you feel better think of that as self-destructive behavior and modify that to Benefit yourself instead. Reach out far enough to help yourself and don't feel guilty about it. If you had a headache you would take an aspirin, I assume. Carry this idea over into cheering yourself up when you need to, and again with no guilt. Don't just feel bad hoping it will stop on it's own or someone else will rescue you. Make small attempts at first and don't let discouragement set in. Try it please. Small steps.

Some people have best friend to go to i don't, i've ben disappointed 2 many times. I like going to the beach and sit alone either think or cry or lock myself in the bedroom and listen to soft music if that doesn't work then i treat myself with ice cream and chocolate. I find peace in thinking that God did not bring me this far to leave me, and believe me God have a way of making things work out

When I'm sad, I let the tears flow. I don't reject/deny/ignore any of my emotions because I feel emotions (positive or negative) are a way my body communicates with me. Of course, there are exceptions (at work, at social gatherings, etc.) in which case, I put my "unacceptable" (by social standards) emotions aside until I am home.
Wouldn't it be great if we could all act like a 5 year old as far as emotional display goes? We'd all sleep like a baby every night!

Being happy=real good feeling...I usually look back to my happy memories...Because I love arts, I imagine things and let my feelings flow with those...I sometimes get a paper and write everything I wanted to be out...I do have a lot of interests...like watching animes, listening to music, watch movies and hang out with my friends...and with my friends, first..I say to them everything I wanna say...then, let go of everything that makes a very heavy feeling...talking to God...is the best thing to do...

By doing something I enjoy!
For me, it's cuddling with my cat and reading for hours on end.
