You can't go past Edger Allan Poe, seriously, The Tell Tale Heart, Black Cat and other are just terrific.
And, like the others have said, Dean Koontz and Stephen King.
Watchers for Dean and Misery for King.
Or, for a more realistic horror, you simply can't go wrong with Thomas Harris brilliant Silence of the Lambs.

Clive Barkers Books of Blood, Stephen King, Ramsey Campbell, Philip Jose Farmer S.F. writer wrote Image of The Beast that gave me fright-mares, Jack Ketchum's Ladies' Night is HORROR at its best. Shirley Jackson's The Haunting of Hill House is one of my favorites.
