If hitting the monitor cleared up the problem, then it's definitely not in the software. I have a hunch that you'd probably better be prepared to spring for a new monitor soon; it will probably cost more to fix an old monitor than to buy a new one, at today's prices. At least flat-panel monitors are a LOT less expensive these days; I guarantee if you get one, you won't go back!

I presume you have a CRT computer screen. The horizontal alignment has long gone out. This many times happens and could be adjusted with the help of establishing the monitors returned covers. given which you already know what you're doing, you may attempt this option, yet be cautious. A CRT includes diverse static electrical energy and there's a different marvel damaging aspects in touch. that's often the horizontal pot that desires adjusting. the reason your demonstrate looks advantageous mutually as domicile windows continues to be booting up, is that its working an exceedingly low selection. you may attempt to alter your selection in domicile windows and spot if the black line disappears. i might advise you're taking it to a television restoration save or a working laptop or laptop save that does computer screen maintenance, and have them verify it out for you. OR in case you may stay with a decrease selection, substitute it to a placing which will fill you demonstrate returned. good success...

Its the monitor, the graphics card would be second( i doubt it).
when you hit the monitor the image changed, so therefor its the monitor,i had the same problem but i found that it was the monitor cable which had a loose pin. and the only way to replace a CRT monitor cable is to buy a new monitor.

It sounds like something is wrong with the monitor itself, probably the capacitor. You can try and get it repaired, but you might be better off buying a new LCD panel - they are very cheap these days.
