In the magic "business", the term "Magician" refers to the general class of entertainer. Illusionists usually perform their magic using larger props and animals or people (e.g. cutting the lady in half, vanishing an elephant). Prestidigitators or Manipulators perform sleight of hand and may do this on stage or close up. Close up magicians perform their magic with much smaller props such as cards and coins.

Illusionist and magician have come to mean the same thing.
However there seems to be a tendency for large scale acts to refer to themselves as illusionists instead of Magicians. I suppose this is so they don't get asked to do children's birthday parties.

"Magic One" hit the nail on the head...
An "illusionist" would be someone like David Copperfield or Doug Henning... performing illusions, usually on a stage with large props. An "illusionist" is a TYPE of "magician"
Think: "All raisins are grapes, but not all grapes are raisins!"
Other forms of "magic" are: sleight-of-hand, hypnotist, seer...
I worked on a large-scale illusion show for a year as a stage-hand and illusion-repair/ maintanance.
