Diesels, as a rule, are more economical than petrol, although the initial purchase price is more, so you've got to rack up a reasonably high mileage to make it pay.
Automatics, as a rule, use more fuel than manuals, because energy is required to operate the torque converter, the auto equivelent of a clutch.
There are, however, exceptions.
The Toyota Aygo and Yaris have an option of an "MMT" (Multi-Mode-Transmission), where it's like a manual, but with an automated clutch action. The economy returns are very similar to the manual transmission.

If you look at a 2 litre car- the manual is usually about 15 % more economical than the automatic and a 2 litre manual diesel in about 20% in petrol but the diesel has less horsepower but more torque The new common rail turbo diesels are as powerful as the same size petrol engine eg BMW, Peugeot,Hyundai

Yes, the automatic transmission takes some of the power so the engine will use more fuel, petrol or diesel. However the way you drive can make a very big difference to the amount of fuel used. Heavy right foot--more fuel.

Yes.
A manual gearbox is always more efficient than a traditional automatic.
However, some newer "automatic" cars use automated manual transmissions, or further development so of the manual transmission (e.g. VW's DSG units) which can be as mechanically efficient as a manual, and more efficient in real use due to the electronics (rather than the driver) choosing the optimum gear).

In general automatic transmissions gets about 10% hotter. That energy has to come from some where. Yes it come from you engine.
===
But again, 10% is very narrow margine (only 2 more mile on 20 MPG). So you could easily loose that by bad driving habit (jack rabbit start, speeding, heaving braking, etc.)

Yes, regardless of whether its a diesel or not.
Reason:
Automatic transmissions reduce the revs. This means that fuel willl be conserved.( the higher the revs, the more fuel is burnt)
Diesel engines have far lower revs than petrol engines, but the principle remains in transmissions

standard transmissions are gear driven so they have less slippage than automatics that have bands.so manual transmit ions always get better fuel millage
