Strong and light.
Aluminum / Manganese alloy, strain hardened and stabilized. It has moderate to high strength, and is non-heat treatable. Good welding characteristics and high resistance to corrosion even in in marine environments.

Strong and corrosion-resistant wheels are obviously a good thing, but the significant aspect of mag wheels (and the reason for paying the price premium) is the low mass. There are two reasons why it is desirable to have low-mass wheels.
First, to minimize the effect of a road disturbance on the car and maximize passenger comfort and stability of any loads the vehicle is carrying. When the wheel hits a bump it acquires an upward velocity that depends on the car's speed and the height of the bump. Because of conservation of momentum, a fraction of this velocity (wheel mass / total mass) is transferred to the car. This fraction is called the "unsprung weight" ratio. The smaller ths number, the less vertical disturbance the car experiences.
Second, the smaller the unsprung weight ratio, the more quickly the wheel responds to the restoring force from the suspension system. This is an important safety and control factor. It means a bump will have less effect on the control of the car since the vertical force between the wheel and the road necessary for steering and braking control is more quickly restored after a bump. In other words there is less time spent with the wheel out of contact or in low-friction contact with the road.
