For the contemporary novel, you should read The Handmaid's Tale, it's an amazing book, beautifully written. It is seemingly set in New England Boston, but it views are applicable to the current time. It's amazing.
As for the classic novel, you should read Jane Eyre. It's similar to books by Jane Auston. This book is a right of passage for every girl...hehe!

Go for David Copperfield (marginally less tedious than Jane Eyre) and Midnight's Children (which is just about readable).
Avoid D H Lawrence like the plague.

I would also recommend Jane Eyre and The Handmaid's Tale (although The Beloved is also very good). I'd suggest reading reviews and seeing which appealed to you most. I've thrown some under the sources below.

Read Jane Eyre. It's a beautiful story about two people learning about themselves. Great imagery and language.
Then out of the other one, read Joyce's The Dubliners. It's got an array of vibrant characters and it's a great take on the lives of the people of Dublin in a time when they were still thought to be inferior to that of the rest of the world. Plus, if this sort of enforced reading irks you, each of the stories in the Dubliners is less than about 25 pages. It makes it faster to read.

Admittedly, I haven't read any of those. But if I were to read two they would be David Copperfield and The Beloved (or Midnight's Children)... they all sound go. I think I'm going to read some of these this summer.

if you have to it for a course and not by choice go to blockbusters and get the DVDs.
one you don't have to trawl through old English which can be hard going if your not used to it but also two you can get director and actor commentary to explain characters and scenes
