Salman Rushdie is a 'media darling' like Robert Mapplethorpe was in the US.

Mapplethorpe took photographs of the Christian crucifix after he put it in a bottle he had peed in. Yep, he sat a cross with the Jesus on it in a bottle of urine, took a photo, and that is considered 'controversial' 'provocative' and 'high art.'

Mapplethorpe would have been knighted, but we don't have such honors in the US.

I am no big fan of Christianity or Islam, but isn't it ridiculous to call 'gifted' or 'artistic' people like Rushdie or Mapplethorpe, who subvert by creating shock value instead of showing talent? Both are a waste of time, in my opinion.

Well, I'm half Muslim, and while I personally did not enjoy Mr Rushdie's novels, I think it's really up to whoever draws up the honours list to decide who to put on it. I have no problem with him getting a knighthood, apart from thinking it a bit strange 'cause he doesn't actually live in the UK.

I don't believe he's been chosen for knighthood to 'hurt Muslims'. The British would not do this, in my opinion.

Salman Rushdie is not a poet. He's primarily an author. He is knighted for his works not for anything else.

His initial major works brought the practiced evils of Islam as imposed, dictated and tought by Islamic clerical fundamentalists and all their terrorist groups to the world wide domain of both the Muslim and non Muslim world. Yes, there are many law abiding and honorable Muslims - but they cower in fright and ignorance - too indoctrinated - to stand up, unite and condemn those evil clerics, mullah's or whatever, who bring nothing but disgrace on a once proud, honorable and respected religion!

He deserves his Knighthood in every measure & I congratulate him for his inherant faith in beleiving the true story of the thugs of Islam should be exposed. How right he's been - all these past years!

First thing i would like to tell is those people who were criminals or any person who did a wrong thing in his life later got some prizes or awards.
1.Ariel sharon who was first considered terrorist no.1 later became president of Israel.
2.IRA in UK is terrorist group who made 100s of attacks later got released from UK for no reason
3.Similarly Rusdie is like one of them who hurt mislims initially and nwo he too gets an honour.

Although I have never cared for his books much, many people do hold hos work in high esteem. I don't think it was to irritate Muslims or else they would have done it twenty years ago when his book came out.

I like his novels, and don't know why muslims should be hurted with that. Rushdie is muslim too.

You take it too personally. The British aren't spiteful - but they also would not derive someone of an honour just to please a bunch of manic Muslims. (Not You!!!!)
