Some black faced breeds of sheep such as a Hampshire will be born all black but the wool will turn white by maturity (face stays black). A true "colored" sheep (they can be brown or red) will stay colored BUT sometimes grazing in the hot sun the tips of the wool will bleach out so it might seem that the sheep is lightening in color but the roots will still be deep black (or red).

Not always. We have had loads of lambs born black coated this year but the majority have faded and are slowly turning lighter as they get older. Some breeds will be born black and stay that way, others change with age, certainly after their first clipping.
