It all depends on the reason you are going in to see them. If it's because you suspect an infection they will insert a speculum (this instrument looks like the bill of a duck) in to your vagina and with a light look at the discharge of your vagina to see what kind of texture it is. They will then take some of it to have put on a slide that then gets sent to a lab to have analyzed to see what kind of infection it is.

If it's for an annual exam they will do a breast exam to check things out. Then when it comes to the pelvic area they will insert the speculum in your vagina as they would if there was possible infection except that this time they are then going to take a special brush to take some of the cells from your cervix. The pap smear is done to check for cervical cancer. They will take those cells and put it on a slide which gets sent to a lab to make sure there is nothing abnormal about those cells.

The results come back in about two weeks. You may notice a bit of spotting after this exam for a couple of days and this is normal because of the irritation of the brush that is used. If that bleeding continues longer than that please get in touch with your dr to find out what they want you to do next.

After the pap smear is done they then will take one hand and put it inside of your vagina and the other hand on your outer abdomen and feel around. This exam is called the bimanual exam and what they are doing is checking to make sure that there is nothing abnormal with the uterus and ovaries when it comes to shape and size and also to make sure there are no masses such as cysts growing inside.

The whole exam for the annual including the breast exam takes about 10 or 15 minutes to do.

They will also ask about your periods and your overall health for your medical history. The reason they ask about periods is because if something is going on it can indicate that a woman is having a health problem such as with endometriosis for example.
