She lost custody of her son in 1993 to her mother, who claimed because she was a lesbian she was an unfit mother, the Virginia courts agreed. I am just curious as to what kind of relationship the family has now.

As of 1996 she still did not have custody of her son.
However from what I read, the petition was a little more on her lack of parenting skills than about her sexual orientation. However I believe the courts were biased against her because of her sexual orientation.
