Picking a server-set located closer to you helps. Turn off anything that runs in the background and uses bandwidth (don't run limewire or download music). Some antivirus and firewalls can cause lag, but I recommend reading up about which ever one you have before messing with it too much.

Blizzard's site has some tips and tricks to help you, such as which ports to allow through. http://www.blizzard.com/support/?id=msi0445p

You dont have to do anything for your computer to make it go into multiplayer mode. The only reason your latency is high is because your computer is crap, your connection to a modem is disconnected, or you got a virus( or 2). But if you got a good computer .w connection working, then it should work fine, check your virus protection software and firewall software and make sure that is on. I play starcraft yo it works fine.

Depends on the server you're using. Try using a local server for maximum speed.
