Yes Dumbledore is really truly dead. He is dead three times over IMHO:

1. I believe, and think will be confirmed in DH, that Dumbledore was fatally injured when he destroyed the horcrux in the ring of Slytherin.

It did not kill him immediately but was slowly doing him in. Remember too, that he was helped by Snape at that time. BTW, I think that is why Snape allowed himself to be bound to Dumbledore's death. He knew Dumbledore was dying and might well die before Draco could make an attempt on him.

2. By drinking the poison to get to the locket in the cave. Dumbledore was making a calculated risk. He hoped he was not too weak and would last long enough for Snape to diagnose the poison and counteract it. We don't know if he'd won his bet, it was going to be a near-run thing. It became moot, though, because of...

3. Draco's attack on Hogwarts and Dumbledore. At that point, he realized that the game was up, that he would die that night, one way or another. That is why he made sure that Harry could not interfere and would not be hurt.

I think he did have one pleasure at the end, that Draco could not "pull the trigger"

By the time Snape got there, all Dumbledore wanted was a clean death. That was what he was asking Snape, which was interpreted by Harry as a plea for mercy (it was, but not in the way Harry supposed). Snape's hatred at what he was forced by circumstances to do was what fueled his Avada Kadavra curse, IMHO.

In DH, I believe that Harry will find himself Dumbledore's heir, will get the penseive, and a bunch of memories that will explain this and a lot more.

In addition to the wonderful arguments presented by previous answerers, I'd like to point out that JK Rowling herself has confirmed that Dumbledore is dead, and she has never lied to her fans.

Someone asked her:
Was Dumbledore considered one of the main characters or will we have the chance to see him in action once again? Since he is the most powerful wizard of all time and Harry Potter is so loyal to him, how could he really be dead?

She answered:
Umm, I really can't answer that question because the answer is in book seven but ... you shouldn't expect Dumbledore to do a Gandalf. Let me just put it that way. I'm sorry (crowd moans and applauds).

Dumbledore will not come back to life, but he will be seen in the next book, either by his portrait, a memory, or some other magical device. Jo even said to Dan Radcliffe that she was having trouble writing about Dumbledore. When Dan asked "Isn't Dumbledore Dead?" Jo said "Yes, but it's complicated" :)
