If it is your first time to pick up a guitar (figuratively speaking), then you need to get an acustic. Don't go electric or bass till you learn the basics and the chords. As far as brands go, I have had three guitars. Currently have two. My first one was a "First Act". My second one was a "Pevey" and my last one was a "Yamaha." If ya got to choose, Go with a Pevey acustic. Let me know if ya need to know anything else about guitar playing! I've been playing for a while, Got my first guitar when I was 12. I tought myself how to play.

If you're a real newbie and it's the first time you play guitar, I advise you to start with an acoustic guitar. It is much easier to start with an acoustic, because the strings are much thicker so your left hand will get used to it, and when you'll switch to the electric guitar it will be easier. I remember I had a friend who started with the electric guitar, and he had some very small fingers and he sometimes cut himself with the strings. And also you have to see if you want to start playing with the fingers or with the pick (the little plastic thing). I advise you to start with the fingers, as it's the most difficult. I started playing 5 years with fingers, and then when I switched and got a pick it only took me 2 months to get used to it.

Now for the guitars, I think the best are the spanish guitars, but they might me a bit expensive. And then when you switch to the electric, there's one important thing : DO NOT BUY A STARTER PACK! These packs are the worst things a musician can buy according to me, because they're really for beginners and you'll soon have to change your guitar if you buy this kind of package. You'd better go in a shop with a friend who knows how to play or even with your teacher, and then choose your guitar with him. It's the best thing to do.
For the electric brands I would advise:
- Ibanez
- Cort(the same manufacturer as Ibanez but cheaper)
- Fender
- WSL(cheap french guitars with a great sound)

I started playing on Alvarez guitars. They're very good quality guitars for the price. Most definately start out on an acoustic guitar, because on an acoustic guitar you can't hide behind distortion, so you're forced to be better than shitty punk-guitarists.

Plus, on an acoustic, it's a bit harder to push the strings down, which will build the callouses (sp?) on your fingers and make it easier for you to play electric later on, should you so choose. Investing in a tuner, or a guitar with a built in tuner is also a great idea. While it's a fantastic skill to be able to tune by ear, it's not always practical.

So, here's what I'd recommend...

a low end Alvarez acoustic guitar (150 bucks or so)
a "kyper" capo (I think that's the brand)
a tuner, unless your Alvarez has a built in tuner. Mines acoustic/electric, and has a built in tuner in the EQ.

Why a capo? Becuase a lot of songs are capoed, and regardless of what people will tell you, the best way to teach yourself how to play guitar is to play your favorite songs... When you start doing that, you'll discover you need a capo.

Oh, and a chord book... Get one of those. They're useful.

Get a good quality USED one. Have a guitar playing friend go along with you when you do to help you pick out one that is suitable for YOU. Acoustic guitars don't require amplifiers, but can be a little harder to play at first. Electric guitars require an amplifier to be heard. Be sure to take some lessons from a QUALIFIED teacher - not all guitar teachers are good teachers. I suggest that you try out both electric and acoustic guitars and see which one feels right to you AFTER you've learned a few basic lessons. You can usually rent a guitar from some stores, and then buy a better one later, but you will get more for your money if you get a decent quality used one first.

It would help if you told us what sort of music you'd like to play.
Generally the way to start is to go with the Squier Strat Pack (it's how I started, I've been playing about 2.5 years now), but if you play a lot of metal music then go with the Ibanez Started Pack (Don't know what it's called)
