I speak Greek.I don't want to disappoint you but Greek is one of the most difficult languages(if not the most difficult) and it isn't possible to learn Greek in a few weeks, not a lot of it at least. You can learn some basics which you would learn while being there on holidays but you won't learn to speak Greek in a way that you can communicate well with others.Don't worry though most Greeks speak English very good,so communication with the locals won't be a problem.
Some basics I can give you are:
Good morning:KaliMEra
Good evening:KaliSPEra
Goodnight:KaliNIxta
Hello:Gia sas(or Gia sou if it is only one person)
How much:POso KAni?
And if you wanna get really close to the locals ;)
I love you:S agapo
I like you:Mou aresis
You can also try and find a little translation book they sell in most countries and you will certainly be able to find it on the place of your vacations. They have it in all sort of languages for example,Greek-English,Greek-German,Greek-Dutch etc...

hello
you didn't mention how soon you will be going to Greece. anyway, the best thing to do is attend a class,if you have still the time for it, otherwise buy a English-Greek dictionary that will help you communicate a little with the citizens (it's always cool to see that you actually can communicate with them;)).
my mom is dutch and she has been living in Greece for 20 years, her Greek is very good, but she still makes some mistakes, but think that she will always have that, as Greek is not her first language.
good luck, and we will be pleased to read about your progress in the Greek language.

Greek was widely spoken in the region at the time. There's no reason why Jesus would not have at least known basic Greek. And to turn Bible-thumper for a minute, remember that when the Roman centurion asked for Jesus' help, Jesus was able to understand him. Most Romans spoke Greek, so it follows that Jesus spoke Greek also. Koine Greek was as widely used then as English is today.

Greek is not language that you can learn before vacation (actually, you can't learn any language that fast). When you learn alphabet and some words, there is still grammar, passive verbs (really long), irregular verbs, nouns... The best way is I guess to be there and listen to people, I am just not sure for how much time.

Learning Greek is not easy, and can be very frustrating for an English speaker....
I do not thing it is THE most difficult, Basque, Finnish and Hungarian are my runners up.
However, there is a way to make it fun. Allow the local guys to teach you and your best friend the language.... Believe me there are going to be many offers.....
And it is the best way to learn a language... :)

Going soon is to soon.. it is difficult, lets even say it is very difficult. After 15 years with several visits yearly, I gave it up. But if godwilling, we can leave Belgium to live in Greece early 2009, I am sure I will learn it. So like me, do not give up, but do not believe you will learn it overnight.
Just back from Greece, I bought a book in Gythio written by Brian Church;
LEARN GREEK IN 25 YEARS
A crash course for the linguistically challenged
National Bestseller / 20.000 idiots can't be wrong..
Lighthearted in writing, Mister Church admits he does not speak, write, read or even remotly recognise the language himself..
So if you do not succeed yourself 'soon', don't blame it on yourselve; I did not made it myself either.
Wish you all the best results however.
Enjoy Greece; its beautiful.
