Because if the needle isn't clean, the lethal injection possibly would not be as effective. A clean needle would get the poison into the person quicker and like the person above me said, probably protocol.

Well sometimes at the last minute the governor calls and stays the execution. What if at the last minute they called, you didn't get executed, you got freed but you died from an infection from an unsterilized need?

good question... i think they should inject a deadly disease that doesn't kill them right away but puts them in so much pain they are going to wish they were dead. and then only have hell to look forward to.
