Distress Signal (as has already been stated by the posters)

Flag Etiquette
STANDARDS of RESPECT
The Flag Code, which formalizes and unifies the traditional ways in which we give respect to the flag, also contains specific instructions on how the flag is not to be used. They are:

The flag should never be dipped to any person or thing. It is flown upside down only as a distress signal.
The flag should not be used as a drapery, or for covering a speakers desk, draping a platform, or for any decoration in general. Bunting of blue, white and red stripes is available for these purposes. The blue stripe of the bunting should be on the top.
The flag should never be used for any advertising purpose. It should not be embroidered, printed or otherwise impressed on such articles as cushions, handkerchiefs, napkins, boxes, or anything intended to be discarded after temporary use. Advertising signs should not be attached to the staff or halyard
The flag should not be used as part of a costume or athletic uniform, except that a flag patch may be used on the uniform of military personnel, fireman, policeman and members of patriotic organizations.
The flag should never have placed on it, or attached to it, any mark, insignia, letter, word, number, figure, or drawing of any kind.
The flag should never be used as a receptacle for receiving, holding, carrying, or delivering anything.
When the flag is lowered, no part of it should touch the ground or any other object; it should be received by waiting hands and arms. To store the flag it should be folded neatly and ceremoniously.

The flag should be cleaned and mended when necessary.

When a flag is so worn it is no longer fit to serve as a symbol of our country, it should be destroyed by burning in a dignified manner.

Flying the flag upside down is a sign of distress, particularly on a ship at sea.

As my understanding when the flag is upside down, it means distress and are in need of help. A lot of people who are stranded or are in need of assistance will put the flag upside down when they have no other way of communicating.

The context of the peace sign is completely different now. It is not a communist symbol anymore, nor an anti-christian symbol either. It just stands for peace. Remember, signs and symbols only have as much meaning as you give them. some people say the triangle is a symbol of the illuminati or NWO, I personally only see a freaking basic geometric symbol. Furthermore, if you really worry about this symbolism stuff, are you aware that the cross many christians wear is really an execution device? and that wearing the cross around your neck would be the same as wearing a replica of the electric chair around your neck? think about that for a moment.

when you fly the flag upside down, it's meant to indicate that your location, such as your house or building, is under attack, siege, or danger even though it may appear to be in a state of calm or normalcy.

it's basically a secret code to the outside world which simply says .... "S.O.S.!!! Send help! Need assistance!"

sometimes, discontents and protestors will use method of flying the flag as a way of getting across their point of view. it's meant to stress how urgent and dire their topic needs to be dealt with.

It's a distress signal. This I remember from my Cub Scout manual from umpteen years ago. (Upside-down flags - you just don't forget those.)

It is an insult to all the people that have worked , died ,gone to war and lost loved ones in the course of securing your rights and freedom. Why would anyone want to display the flag other than in a resectful way??I have a few complaints about the way thing are done in the USA,but it's still the best darn thing in the world and I'll die for it.

It's an insult, and you are degrading the flag by doing so. The flag was meant to be flown with honor and respect.
