When you think of the 1950's, what comes to mind? Besides the obvious poodle skirts and soda shops. I mean... who was famous in the 50's? What was going on? What is that Era known for?

It was known for a simpler way of life, kids playing outside not watching tv. Families that all lived together and ate dinner with each other. Sitting after dinner to watch one of the 3 channels on tv as a family. Howdy Doody, Father Knows Best. Mothers that stayed home and had warm cookies and milk waiting for you when you got off the bus. Carrying a bookbag to school, eating an apple at recess after playing on the monkey bars. Having to show the teacher your scar to prove you were immunized. Getting the Salk Polio vaccine on a sugar cube for the first time. Families having only one car that the dad took to work. Playing kick ball till dark then catching fireflys in a jar. Listening to Elvis for the first time on T.V. Watching Miss Frances on Ding Dong School. Seeing Bonanza as the first color show on the new T.V. Falling in love with Adam Cartwright and then Paul on Donna Reed Show. Swooning over Ricky Nelson singing at the malt shop. Seeing Kruvschev in a motorcade in Washington, D.C. saying he will bury us. Watching a young guy with a guitar sing at the opening of a local grocery store. His name was Jimmy Dean and now he makes sausage. Saving up RC Cola caps to ride the ponys at the pony ring. Going to the White House and it didn't have a fence. Watching from the parade route as John F. Kennedy took the oath of office.

Joseph McCathey comes to mind immediately--the whole McCarthiesm/Red Scare thing.

I think you can classify the era as a time when the Cold War started up---the anti-Communism swell. The reason we entered the Korean and the subsequent Vietnam War. Fears of being wiped off the planet by the "evil" Communists. My dad told me in school they used to do nuclear bomb drills--get under their desks to protect themselves from the blasts. Bomb shelters--the whole decade was awash with fear.

Peace and good times in between wars. Basically. Also ushering in a new era of inventions and luxuries. Such as TV, electronics, appliances, not to mention music.
