Should I have a finished product or try to sell the story...is this impossible to do?

It would be a lot easier for you to sell the book if you didn't fail so horribly at life. Perhaps you should first learn why you fail so hard, and then try to sell your book, which most likely fails just as badly.

On a related note, the fact that you're asking this stuff rather than just doing it shows just how much you fail.

You definitely should have part of the graphic novel pasted up to resemble the final product. No one in professional publishing will be interested in an idea unless you're famous. I'd say create a package with 20% of the work completed, so if it's 80 pages, you have 16 completed. Then provide a summary of the rest. Ideally, though you should have the whole thing completed. Good luck. Check Writers Marketplace, a book that lists publishers who would take a look at your work.

Find a library that has a copy of Literary Marketplace in their reference section and spend some time surfing it. You might also try Writers Market. I am not familiar with the procedure for selling graphic novels - but those two sources are good ones to do research. You might also join Absolute Write Water Cooler and check out if anyone there knows. A lot of authors hang out there. Pax - C

Hmm, sounds interesting. I've heard of some graphic novels starting out as free on the internet, and once they were popular they were able to sell them. You could try putting it up for free, and see if it gets popular... or try talking to a publisher?

Finish it first. You will not sell an idea or a partial book unless your name is Stephen King etc. For non-fiction, an idea and a couple of chapters may sell it.
