You have some choices. But direct-connect (wired) type solutions would always give better sound quality than using an FM-transmitter.

Have a look at this:

Amazon has this item. USA Spec PA11BMW

Product Description
The PA11BMW provides direct connection for an iPod and an optional audio source such as satellite radio, DVD, or video game system. Both the iPod and the additional audio source can be selected from the factory radio?s front panel. Allows selection of tracks or playlists. Compatible with all iPod models featuring the dock connector including the new iPod nano and 5G iPod video.

Two operating modes are available- locked and unlocked. In locked mode the controls on the factory radio will operate the iPod only, and the iPod's click wheel will be locked out for safety while driving. In the unlocked mode the iPod's controls can still be used to navigate through the iPod's menus and select songs, artists, playlists, etc. and the factory radio controls will still provide basic navigation functions including song up/down and FF/REW functions. Both modes still charge the iPod while connected, for up to one hour to prevent over-charging.

Compatible with:
3 Series - 1996-2005
5 Series - 1998-2003
X3/X5 - 1999-2006
Z3/Z4 - 1999-2006
Mini Cooper - 2002-2006

Special Note:
The PA11BMW is not compatible with vehicles equipped with GPS, Satellite Radio, CD Changer or DSP system.

You cannot use this AS WELL as a CD changer. You will need to disconnect the CD changer if you have one in order for this item to work.

First you have to choose an iPod system. The system is a control unit that you plug your iPod into. The other end of the contol unit then connects to your radio (from a direct connection or an FM transmitter). The ipod connection can be put anywhere. I have mine in the glove box. Just a wire in the side of the glovebox I plug my iPod in to. My control unit is actually behind the radio in the center console and can't be seen.

I chose the H-K Drive+Play System for my Buisiness CD. However, the Buisness CD is not iPod ready, you can't plug the Drive+Play (or any other iPOD Car system you choose) directly into the Buisiness CD.
You can either get the FM Transmitter for the Drive+Play (or any other system) that will play the music through one of the FM channels on the radio. Or you can search the internet for a Drive+Play adapter that allows you to plug the Drive+Play right into the port on the back of the Buisiness CD that usually connects to the CD Changer. I used the adapter because the FM transmitter sounds awful and gives poor quality.

BTW... I chose to go with the adapter because I wanted to keep the original look of the stock radio and orange display in my Z3. If this doesn't matter to you I would recomend buying a new radio that is compatible with the Drive+Play or whatever sytem you purchase. It's not much more than the cost of the adapter I had to buy.

There are many Car iPod systems, I chose the Harmon-Kardon Drive+Play because it gives you a little LCD Screen you can mount on the dash and more importantly it was the only system (at least a year ago) that gave you full access to everything on your iPod in your car. You can search all Artists, Albums, Playlists, etc. Most other systems only give you access to the first 6 Playlists in your iPod (Useless!). They even have a 2nd generation Drive+Play system which is wireless, looks nice!

The little controller for the Drive+Play system works very nicely and almost exactly matches the scroll wheel on the iPod. It also looks just like the the little joystick in newer BMWs that is part of the iDrive System. I mounted my control stick right behind the shifter, in front of the cupholder in the center console. Great position and easy to use.

I LOVE THIS SYSTEM!!!

you'll need one of those transmitters that attach to your ipod.
