Lots of good choices depending on the tastes of the fishkeeper, and the tank size and environment you want. Killies are very pretty with the colors. I'd also have to say I like rainbowfish, discus, and some of the native darters (like rainbow darter) and sunfish (pumpkinseed is my favorite from this group). Bettas (particularly good quality crowntails, halfmoons, and superdeltas) are nice as well.

Guess that's why I have so many tanks - I can't pick just one group to keep.

Killifish are beautiful. I love blue discus and rummynose tetras.

Rainbow fish are my absolute favorite. Dwarfs! So cute!

i agree with the native darters---shame they are hard to keep.
bettas are nice.
dwarf neon rainbowfish are gorgeous, but they really need to be seen in person. photos don't do it justice.
