i have a 6 1/2 wk old son and im having a bit of a problem. no matter what time i feed him at and no matter what i do, he wont fall asleep until 2 am every night. is there any way of getting him to fall asleep earlier? its been this way for a couple of weeks so he's pretty much on that schedule. twice he's slept thru from 2 am til 8 am but normally hes up again at 5 am to eat. right now hes on a feeding schedule where he'll eat around 9 pm, then again at 12 am and then he's awake for minimum 2 hrs, even if i try to keep him awake during the day which makes it tough because i get between 2 and 3 hrs sleep until his next feeding, am awake with him for about an hour doing that and then have to wake up an hour later to drive my husband to work (he could drive himself but then i'd be car-less all day.. he works at least 12 hrs a day) and by the time we get home he's ready for another feeding.. he later falls asleep around 9-10 am for a few hours... how can i get him to fall asleep earlier?

some of the later answers kinda missed the point i think... im not asking how i can get him to sleep longer; i know hes a newborn and its not gonna happen. i just wanted to know how to switch his awake time from 12 am to 2 am to earlier in the evening so we can all go to bed earlier.

I have a 2 year old and a 7 week old. With both of them I just made sure the house had a lot of light and noise during the day and went for walks every day. I never let them nap during the day in their cradle, only in the swing or chair. At night I have my room (where the cradle is) completely dark and quiet at bedtime (9:00 is bedtime for the kids at my house), I lay down with her on my bed and nurse her until she's calmed down and almost asleep and put her into her cradle then rock it and shush her to sleep. It's worked on both of my kids, I've never had sleep deprivation problems. Both of them started sleeping through the night at 6 weeks. Hope that helps!

6.5 weeks would be a bit early to expect him to go all the way through the night. But starting at the 9pm feeding, cut out the awake time. Just feed then back to bed. If you're not swaddling you may want to start, especially at night. Then at the 8am feeding, work the awake (activity) time back into the routine. At that age, you're probably not going to get more than about an hour total of awake time, including feeding, before going back down for a nap.

If you know that you'll have the hour car ride to work into your flexible scheduling, then wake your baby early enough to feed and play and then have the car ride at nap time.

The night feedings: keep the lights low, no tv or radio, little eye contact, no talking. Just matter of fact feed and back to bed. This should help get things rearranged a bit.

My son is 7 months previous. He has no sleep schedule in besides. he's taking one 2 hour nap an afternoon, from time to time interior the morning, from time to time interior the afternoon. At nighttime, the time he is going down varies, yet he will sleep approximately 3-4 hours, have a bottle, then awaken approximately each 2 hours. I even have given up attempting to start any sort of schedule. he isn't cranky in any respect and smiles and laughs all day, so I determine he's getting adequate sleep.

A three hour feeding schedule is normal for a baby this age. There's a fantastic book that may help you with your baby's sleep habits: "The Baby Whisperer Solves All Your Problems" by Tracy Hogg and Melinda Blau.
Good luck!

It's gonna be like that for atleast 3 months after birth, but eventually the baby will start to sleep longer and more regular hours. It's tough the first few months. Try taking naps when he naps. I'm sure you will feel more rested.
