This just hit me tonight. Let's say Manny retires a Red Sox player and gets his ten years in Beantown. After gaining entrance to the Hall of Fame, the Sox retire his #24 in a glorious ceremony...

My problem is this...what about Dwight Evans? Dwight is a Red Sox HOFer who also wore #24 and won about 9 gold gloves and put up some of the biggest numbers is Sox history. Plus, the #24 will hang over the right field corner, where Dwight was at his finest....

Do you see #24 as legendary Dwight Evans, or as Manny Ramirez...

I foresee a showdown...

Yeah, that's kind of weird to think of the #24 with Ramirez's name on it hanging near Dewey's old stomping ground, but I don't think there's any question that Manny will - eventually - be the more legendary player. It's tough to picture that now given that he's still playing, and that Evans is seen in such a reverential manner by Sox fans, but I think time will offer perspective.

From a purely statistical standpoint, there's no comparison. Even compensating for the difference in eras, Manny is amazing, and he's a guaranteed first-ballot HOFer. He's constantly near the top in OPS (10th all time), and his power numbers are fantastic. Don't get me wrong - Evans had some good numbers, but his OPS is well over 150 points lower, and all those Gold Gloves can't make up the difference. One is a HOFer, the other a member of the Hall of Very Good.

I think Dewey should be happy - Ramirez has done his number proud. I think Bosox fans should accept Manny as #24, and I don't think that will disrespect Evans in any way.

Dewey was a great fielder and a very good hitter. Manny is a great hitter. As for fielding, well - he's a great hitter. I can honestly say Manny's the only LF I ever saw cutoff a throw from the CF to the SS. Dewey must have coughed up a little something when he saw that.

As for "who's the greatest #24" - it's probably still actually Mays. For who's the greatest #24 in Boston - I'd vote for the one with a World Series ring, even though Evans is always one of my all-time personal favorites.

Yeah I noticed that last night during the rain delay that Dwight Evans also wore #24, I am really undecided about this question, Manny was on the team in 2004, got a ring etc

Hmmmm.... This is an interesting conflict you have presented. It's not a definite thing that Manny will retire with the Sox and who is to say he is going to make it into the HOF. I say give it to Dwight Evans, one of the best gloves in Beantown history.

You bring up some great points, but if Evans is as great as u say, why is his number not retired yet? Manny is clearly a Hall of Famer whereas Dewey is only in the Sox HOF

Sorry but Manny Ramirez would win that one. I agree with you Dewy had a great career, a cannon for an arm. But the powers to be(the red sox organization)did not retire # 24.

Manny is a great hitter, but he can't hold a candle to Dewey's defense, hustle, and class. I think it would be a disjustice to Dwight Evans if they retire that number under Manny's name.
