It's a difficult question because the person who wins their party's primary is not always the one who's the best overall candidate. For example, both Bill Clinton and Ronald Reagan were farther from the center than others in their party - yet both got the nomination.

The conventional wisdom says run to the extreme to get your party's nomination and run to the center to get the election.

Right now, Clinton's probably got the best chance of winning both the election and her party's primary. Yet other Dems, like Obama and Edwards, would have a better chance of winning a general election. Ditto the Repubs. Giuliani is in the lead, but many folks wouldn't vote for him in the general election.

Hillary Clinton could win because she was intelligence and experience as a lawyer, Senator and former First Lady. Likewise, she inherited the network of fundraisers that catapulted Bill Clinton to the Presidency.
