Anything by Frank Peretti, in my opinion, is worth the time to read and finish his books. I suggest "This Present Darkness" and "The Oath" but there are plenty more out there!
Also, someone mentioned C.S. Lewis. You can never go wrong with The Chronicles of Narnia! Hope this helps.

if you like political intrigue novels, i'd recommend Joel C. Rosenberg.
He's an excellent writer with compelling characters. Sometimes he gets a bit preachy, but that's generally a few paragraphs you can skim over and get back to a compelling read.
he also has a knack for predicting world events in his novels shortly before they actually happen
His first book: The Last Jihad - pretty accurately predicts the 9/11 attacks and the resulting war against Iraq.
His second book: The Last Days - deals with the death of Yasser Arafat not long before he actually died.
His third book: The Ezekiel Option - i don't know much about this one as it's the only one i haven't read.
His fourth book: The Copper Scroll - well, not much come true from this one yet, but it's a great mix of political intrigue with indiana jones-style archaeological action.
I'm not a Christian, but i've very much enjoyed Joel C. Rosenberg's books

I'm not a big Christian-themed reader, but I stumbled upon Han Nolan, who I thought did have her preachy books, but also knew how to qualm it and preach equality, perhaps even coexistance at that.
She is more of a teen fiction writer, but her best book which isn't too over the top, is If I Should Die Before I Wake.

Any books by Ted Dekker [such as Obsessed, Thr3e(my favorite), Saint, The Circle Trilogy, or Showdown].
Frank Peretti-The Oath or Monster
C.S. Lewis-The Chronicles of Narnia. I recommend The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.

i don't believe there is a great deal of entertainment value in 'preachiness' whether it has to do with Christian beliefs, cultural beliefs, or rules of the road. This kind of thing can be worked into a story without being 'preachy' - it isn't the content most people take exception to, it is the manner in which the message is delivered.

Ted Dekker is my favorite author. Start with his Circle Trilogy: Black, Red and White. Also try Comes A Horseman by Robert Liparulo and Waking Lazarus by T. L. HInes.

Ted Dekker is not the least bit preachy but rather quite thought provoking. Blink is one of my favorite books.
Oath and Monster by Frank Peretti are also quite good.
