PUT THEM BACK!
Teach your grandchildren to respect nature. Look at it this way: what kind of humans do the turtles think these children are?

Painteds. If putting them back isn't an option, it is your responsibility to replicate their natural environment as closely as possible. Assuming you have none of what these turtles need, (and that they are painteds which are semi aquatic) the set-up will cost about $160.
a 40-50 gallon tank
a UVB bulb and clamp lamp (Fluckers lamp + ZooMed bulb)
a basking area (ZooMed turtle dock is great)
turtle food (ZooMed or ReptoMin) + "turtle bone" (cuttle bone)
medium sized gravel substrate (too big to eat)
a POWERFUL filter (turtles are MeSsY)
make sure the tank is on a level surface. rinse the gravel and add it to the bottom of the tank. install the turtle dock and filter, and add about 8-10 inches of dechlorinated water (retisafe works well for this). position the lamp so that it shines on the basking spot. let it run for an hour or so and add the turtles. feed every other day or so according to the directions on the bottle. you can also add feeder minnows or give crickets (just dump them in the water). some turtles will eat small pieces of dark leafy greens, carrots, or fruit (never citrus). good luck!

This is a great opportunity to teach the grandkids respect for nature. Maybe you can make a project of finding out what kind of turtles they are and them find out the best way to return them to nature. You sound like cool grandparents- you'll be fine at whatever you decide.

Be a responsible adult and put those poor creatures where they were found.
IF you really want a turtle buy it, and all the necessary accesories from a pet store .
They are not toys.

please please take them back!
If you insist on keeping them take a picture and join the CTTC group in Yahoo, or www.tortoise.org
In some states it is illegal to remove a turtle or tortoise from the wild.
You'll want to take them to a vet too to make sure they arent carrying any parasites and what not! Make doubly sure it is a reputable reptile vet and theyve handled turtles before.

Sounds like the box turtle.
Very hard to care for. Leave them where they were found, or if your grandkids insist on taking them home, set them free in the backyard.

painter turtles--please let them go, let the grand children enjoy them for a few hours and tell them that they have to go home to their families now....Turtle are reptiles--cold blooded they will never cuddle or be happy to see you--they need heat and water--a warm rock and a lake is their home
