My computer is falling apart. I want to buy a new one. I've had this one for years. I have Microsoft Office (including Publisher) & Nero Burning Rom on it. I have no idea where I put my disks. I can't find them. I was wondering if there were a way that I could burn those programs onto a disk, so I can have them to put on my new pc, w/out having to buy them over again. If so, what type of disk would I use. I have CD-R's that I burn music on. Would that work or would I need a CD-RW? And on Nero (the burning program I have) would I choose to make a "data" disk or choose another option? Thank you for your time!

Sorry, but it's not likely to work that way.

Those programs not only install files to you hard drive but also install changes to your system registry. You're going to have to find replacement disks to move those programs.

No, you can't burn installed programs on a disk and expect them to work on another computer. There's more to programs than just their folder in the "Program Files" directory.

Since I see your computer literacy is not high, your only option would be to buy the software again. Otherwise you could install a BitTorrent client and download the software, then burn it to any CD, the same way millions of people download illegal software and movies.
P2P clients such as limewire etc. are not very good for downloading such files.

Sorry... it is possible to copy the program files to a CD-R, but you can't just drop them onto a new computer and have them work.

Programs have to be INSTALLED. The installation process makes many changes and records file associations, etc. in the system registry. Copying programs to a drive doesn't make the proper registry changes.

It's kinda possible to "burn" programs and the entire operating system to a disk, but not a CD one or alike. You can copy (i.e. clone) your system by making a "shadow" copy of the entire partition to another hard drive. It's called "disk imaging" or "disk snapshotting", which can be researched and experimented by yourself. This obeys to destroy the original source once you have it all copied or cloned to another storage device, in case you own a propietary system like the Microsoft Windows ones. Look for tech advise in case you can't accomplish the methods I mention.
Good luck.

You might be able to burn them to a cd-rw but you have to select data disc then drag the files to the burn list if you have a burn list

That won't work.

Ask a friend to loan you the CD, that way you will have a legitimate copy.

Or if there is a "Hook Up Man" in your neighborhood, try him. He can usually get whatever you want at a very low price. He's the guy who sells the bootleg CDs and DVDs.
