The best value in telescopes are Dobsonian reflectors. These are Newtonian reflectors on a simple alt-az (tilt & swivel) base. The tradeoff is that these are totally manual telescopes - you find the objects to look at, and then nudge the scope along to track. This is probably the most common telescope type among serious amateurs. If you need a little more help finding things, Orion offers their Intelliscope line with a computerized object locator.

You can learn a lot about telescopes by attending star parties with your local astronomy club, if there is one. http://www.skytonight.com/ will find the nearest club to you. Other good sources are online forums such as the Yahoo telescopes group - http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/telescopes/ .

Whatever type of telescope you get, buy from a reputable astronomy shop. Avoid Walmart, eBay, sporting goods store, camera stores, etc. Just about everything sold at those places is junk.

As Injanier says, Dobsonians are the "best bang for the buck":
http://www.telescope.com/jump.jsp?itemType=CATEGORY&itemID=9
http://sky-watcher.net/swtinc/product.php?class1=1&class2=106

Any of these will show you tons of detail on the Moon, Venus' phases, Mars' polar caps, Jupiter's moons, cloud belts and maybe even the Great Red Spot, Saturn's rings and moons, and hundreds of double stars, star clusters, nebulae, and galaxies. Get the largest size you can afford and transport, since the best views will come from dark sky sites
