When and how is the best time to split hostas? Can it be done all summer long? I have huge masses of them and want to move some to our back yard this week (I live in eastern Kansas if that matters). Any help greatly appreciated!

The roots on those things are tubular and snaky looking , spread out kind of like Asparagus roots, So be prepared to need some filler soil. and a strong back. Probably want to wait till its cooler and if it's dry, it's generally easier to move them when the soil is damp. easier to shovel.

I saw a great idea for splitting hostas. You take a bulb planter and dig a hole in the new location, you remove some dirt from around the roots of the hosta to be split and find a good area to split off, then using the same bulb planter you dig down, removing part of the root etc and pull up a plug just the size to go in the new hole you dug. Neat huh.

Anytime & they`re fairly hardy, so just chop them with the shovel & move them. Plenty of water after.

Sure you can, I just moved some a week ago and you can't tell they were transplanted. Just make sure you keep them well watered. Good luck.
