I have a 30 ft Tarten sailboat with an Atomic 4 engine and I am having an overheating problem. I changed the impeller and pulled the heads. I have a good flow of water through the engine and changed the thermostate. Any ideas?

These engines are getting very ancient. If it's raw water cooled (and most of them were), the problem is surely corrosion on the internal passages of the engine. Pull the exhaust manifold - you may be able to work an air hose and a wire coat hanger into the nooks and cranies of the block and clear out the 1/2 inch or so of rust you'll find there. The problem is that the corrossion also goes along with thinning of the cylinder walls, which eventually will mean death for your engine.

It's a lot easier to clear out the passages when the engine is out of the boat where you can disassemble it and go to work with an air hose and a garden hose. Be sure to get a new set of gaskets before you start and don't be overly agressive - you can poke right through to a cylinder and then it's all over charlie. Good luck.

Did you also change the housing the impeller turns in? Sometimes it get worn to. Pops
